One Week Countdown
Here we go! We have 1 week until Sophie's due date, so anytime over the next few days the puppies could come. She is getting pretty big now!
We have built her a nice whelping crate for her to have her babies, complete with soft bedding (£23.49) and warming mat (£39.99). We did originally have a lot more padding in there but Sophie made it very clear she did not want such a thick, fluffy bed and quickly kicked it out. [Note: we already had the cage and the box was free!]
In preparation for the birth, we had our vet friend give Sophie a check up and purchased all the puppy birthing equipment (to be covered in a later post). All seems to be progressing well and mum is generally happy. She is sleeping and eating lots but overall still her usual bubbly self, even still trying to wrestle with me when I sit on the floor. Her appetite is actually pretty crazy right now. She often will try to sneak food but generally will not be brazen about it. Now, she basically tries to eat food out of your mouth! I guess she has a lot of growing babies to feed though, so who can blame her?
Speaking of lots of babies, we have no idea how many puppies to expect. We have been placing bets on how many. I was originally punting for 5, but after looking through her pedigree, her mother had 8 pups in her first litter and 10 in her second; the latter being the one in which Sophie was born. Maybe she will have far more than 5! It is going to be exciting to see.
Hopefully, one of our next updates will be the birth of the puppies!
